The workshop on Scientific Writing for doctoral students in the “MINT” faculties (mathematics, natural sciences, computer science and engineering) focuses on (1) mistakes that are commonly made by non-native English speakers in scientific writing, (2) the proper construction of an English scientific text and (3) how to get started writing a paper. The workshop is designed to be interactive and flexible, and questions are encouraged. It is geared to meet the experience level and needs of scientists at the beginning of their research careers. Some of the topics discussed will include describing common language mistakes made by non-native English speakers, how to choose the strength of the adjective or adverb when presenting sensitive results, good English paragraph structuring to clearly present scientific ideas, how to write a direct sentence, some resources to be aware of, tips for how to get started writing a scientific paper, where to put which information in an abstract or paper, and how to appropriately gear your text to the audience who will be reading it.
